How to Be Heart Smart at Home and Dining Out

Do you want to make more heart-healthy food choices while shopping and preparing your meals? Do you know the best heart-healthy options when ordering off a menu? Become heart smart with this four part heart screening and education series. River Falls Area Hospital, River Falls Medical Clinic and United Hospital Heart Center are partnering with Dick’s Fresh Market and West Wind Supper Club to present How to be Heart Smart, a program that offers real life practice in making heart-healthy choices.

Session #1: The Heart Test
Saturday, January 19, 7-9:30 a.m. RFAH Classrooms B/C
Blood will be drawn to test total cholesterol LDL, HDL, triglycerides and blood glucose. Your blood pressure, heart rate, height, weight, BMI and hip ratio will also be taken.

Session #2: Your Personal Heart Smart Results
Monday, January 28, 6-7 p.m. RFAH Classrooms B/C
Participants will receive their test results and learn their personal risk for heart disease. Shauna Knott, RFAH Wellness Center coordinator, and Debra Sanders, our registered dietitian, will explain risk factors and how to reduce them.

Session #3: Shopping for Heart-Healthy Foods
Tuesday, February 5, 6-7:30 p.m. Dick’s Fresh Market, River Falls
Participants will receive heart-healthy shopping tips and learn what to look for when selecting foods for a heart-healthy eating plan.

Session #4: Heart-Healthy Dining Options
Thursday, February 7, 6-7:30 p.m.
Participants will learn the best heart-healthy options when ordering off a menu. Tony Leone, chef at West Wind Supper Club, will demonstrate heart healthy cooking methods and prepare samples of heart-healthy entrees.
